Lash Extensions

Eyelash extensions are made out of either silk, mink, or poly nylon synthetic and they last for approximately four weeks. Once the length, look, and type of lashes are chosen, they are applied one at a time using a semi-permanent glue that is not irritating to the eye or damaging to the natural lashes.

Applying a full set of lashes takes about two hours. Some of our patients prefer applying a half set of lashes for a more economical, but also dramatic effect.

Depending on the condition of your own natural lashes certain lengths or thicknesses may be better suited to you. The length and thickness of the extensions can affect the health of your own lashes. For example, typically, if a person’s own natural lashes are on the thinner shorter side, it may not be recommended for them to get extensions that are extremely thick and long, it may be too much for the natural lashes to hold up and remain healthy–in such cases our aestheticians may recommend starting with a partial set of lashes. We like to remind our clients that it is always easier to add more than to remove lashes!

There are some potential risks that make visiting our cosmetic office important when considering extensions:

  • The type of product used for extension applications is extremely important. Your eyes are shut the whole time lash extensions are being applied, and no glue will ever get into your eye. However, to avoid irritation, it is essential that the glue being used is safe for your eyes and doesn’t contain anything that can harm them. We use only the highest grade products that are shipped quickly and stored properly.
  • Additionally, our licensed technicians only use the proper medically approved techniques for hygiene and cleanliness.  The importance of this when getting a procedure involving one’s eyes cannot be over-stated.
  • In the very unlikely event of an allergic reaction to the products used for extensions, our team, including the medical team from our dermatology office is prepared and able to diagnose and properly treat you to mitigate any discomfort or problems.
  • Inexperienced, untrained or poorly skilled technicians may inappropriately attach an individual lash to multiple lashes.  This causes a clumped look and may cause problems such as breakage or falling out of the natural real lashes of the person.

A few more answers about lash extensions:

Eyelash Extensions

We recommend keeping water away from your lashes for the first 12 to 24 hours after application or touch-ups. Water may weaken the adhesive before it sets and cause lashes to fall off. The after-care our office recommends may vary depending on the glue used for your extensions. With some glues, oil-based products or makeup removers around the eye area are not recommended.

If you wear mascara in addition to your lash extensions, we recommend only applying it to the tips of the extensions and minimally. Applying mascara at the base of extensions is not recommended and using waterproof mascara is not recommended.

Despite the myth that lash extensions ruin your own lashes– they do not. The licensed and certified professionals in our office know how to properly apply lash extensions which, when applied correctly, are safe and do not ruin the health of your natural lashes.
